Udham Singh, a revolutionary fighter of Indian independence movement who was known for his assassination of Michael O’Dwyer. Michael O Dwyer was the Lieutenant governor Punjab and was considered responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, a massacre on Indians by the British which killed close to 400 people and injured more than 1,200. The assassination of Michael O Dwyer was considered as a revenge on the Jallianwalabagh massacre.
The arrest of Saifuddin Kitchlew and Satyapal based on the provisions of the Rowlatt act infuriated many and led to massive protests. The massacre was a consequence of this protest. Udham Singh was deeply hurt and angered by the brutality meted out to Indian citizens during the massacre. Singh was involved in revolutionary politics and was inspired by Bhagat Singh and his group besides Udham Singh was also part of the Ghadar party which was working on mobilizing Indians living abroad for the national struggle.
On 13 March 1940, at a joint meeting of the East India Association and the Central Asian Society Singh entered the hall with a revolver and shot O’Dwyer twice as he moved towards the speaking platform. Few others on the podium were also injured. Singh was arrested on site as he never tried to flee from the place and on On 1 April 1940, Singh was formally charged with the murder of Michael O’Dwyer and was hanged on 31st July 1940.
