Karnataka: 3 Infants Die After Measles-Rubella Shots, CM Bommai Orders Probe

According to reports, the investigation discovered that the nurse had collected the immunisation vials from the pharmacist one day before and put them in a hotel fridge, which is against the practice. This led to the deaths of three infants.
After three infant deaths were reported in Karnataka's Belagavi district on January 11, CM Basavaraj Bommai has requested a report from the Deputy Commissioner. The babies are reported to have died after taking the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine shots.
Two healthcare professionals, the nurse who administered the vaccine and a pharmacist, have been suspended on suspicion of delivering the MR vaccination in unhygienic and hazardous settings in the Belagavi district. During the investigation, it was found that they had allegedly not followed an aseptic or surgically sterile procedure while inoculating the infants. According to IANS, the investigation discovered that the nurse had collected the immunisation vials from the pharmacist one day before and put them in a hotel fridge, which is against the practice. This led to the deaths of three infants.
On January 11 and 12, more than 20 infants from both villages received the vaccine, officials added that although two infants died on the same day of inoculation, one died on Saturday at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS).
Officials also said that samples of the vaccine had been sent to the central vaccine unit, and urine, stool and viscera samples of the victims have been sent for forensic testing, as per India Today.
Official's Take On The Incident
K Sudhakar, the Karnataka Health Minister, stated that CM has ordered a new high-level inquiry into the terrible incident and has sought reports within two days.
Belagavi District Health Officer Dr SV Munyal said the guilty will be punished. A committee has been formed to investigate the negative effects of vaccination. He said that blood and excreta samples from the babies had been sent to the lab, and the results will provide a clearer picture. In addition, the department is undertaking its own inquiry.
Furthermore, the DHO informed reporters that the vaccine batch provided to the youngsters had been forwarded to a vaccine testing centre near Delhi.
