The Uttarakhand government is reportedly gearing up to hold a special session of the state assembly to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) draft. The UCC draft, prepared earlier this year by a committee under Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, aims to establish a common set of laws applicable to all citizens, irrespective of their religion, in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.
Key provisions of the UCC draft for Uttarakhand include a ban on polygamy, registration for live-in couples and equal inheritance rights for both sons and daughters.
The UCC for Uttarakhand was a significant promise made by the BJP during the state assembly elections last year. Chief Minister Dhami formed a committee headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai to draft the UCC soon after coming into power for a second consecutive term. The committee engaged with a diverse range of citizens, gathering opinions from over 2 lakh people and various stakeholders, reported NDTV.
The proposed UCC aims to bring uniformity and address personal matters under a common legal framework, reflecting a broader societal and legal reform initiative. The upcoming special session of the state assembly will play a crucial role in the deliberations and potential implementation of the UCC in Uttarakhand.
